Athletics is arguably one of the oldest forms of organised sport having featured in the ancient Olympic Games as far back as 700 BC. It incorporates a variety of track running events — from 60m up to 10,000m — and a range of jumping and throwing ‘field’ events.
Jersey has one athletics track at FB Fields in St Clement, which is used by the Island’s only track and field club — Jersey Spartan AC. There are also long-distance clubs in existence for those who prefer road running and/or cross country.
Athletes based in Jersey compete within the Hampshire Athletics Association and regularly achieve success in the UK. The Island had three competitors in Jersey colours at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the shot putt and discus (Shadine and Zane Duquemin) and high jump (Simon Phelan).
